Windows 98 and Windows 95 Setup

These simple instructions will serve to help you configure Windows 98 and Windows 95 to use the Internet through TConline. You may need your Windows installation CD.

PART A - Configure the Network

  1. Click on 'Start | Settings | Control Panel'.
  2. Double-click on the Network icon.
  3. You must have at least three items listed in order to connect to TConline.
    1. Client for Microsoft Networks
    2. Dial-Up Adapter
    3. TCP/IP
  4. If you're missing...
    1. Dial-Up Adapter
      1. Click on 'Add', select 'Adapter' and click on 'Add'.
      2. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'Dial-Up Adapter' on the right.
      3. Click on 'OK'.
    2. TCP/IP
      1. Click on 'Add'
      2. Select 'Protocol' and click on 'Add'
      3. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'TCP/IP' on the right.
      4. Click on 'OK'
    3. Client for Microsoft Networks
      1. Click on 'Add'
      2. Select 'Client' and click on 'Add'
      3. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'Client for Microsoft Networks' on the right.
      4. Click on 'OK'
  5. If you're on a Local Area Network (LAN), check with your local Network Administrator before performing this step. If your computer is not connected to other computers, it is safe to proceed.
  6. If you have listed 'Client for Netware Networks', 'IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol', 'NetBEUI', or any other entries not listed above, click on each one in turn and click on 'Remove' to remove them.
  7. Under 'Primary Network Logon' make sure that 'Windows Logon' is selected from the pulldown menu.
  8. Double-click on 'Client for Microsoft Networks'. Make sure nothing is checked under 'Logon validation'. Under 'Network logon options', select 'Quick logon'. Click on 'OK'.
  9. Double-click on 'TCP/IP'.
    1. A warning message may appear advising that "You have asked to change TCP/IP properties for a dialup adapter." Click 'OK' if this message does appear.
    2. Under the 'IP Address' tab,
      1. Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically'.
      2. Under the 'WINS Configuration' tab, Select 'Disable WINS Resolution'.
      3. Under the 'Gateway' tab, Make sure that the box under 'Installed Gateways' is empty.
        • If you have anything listed there, select it and click on 'Remove'.
      4. Under the 'DNS Configuration' tab, make sure 'Disable DNS' is selected.
    3. Click on 'OK'.
  10. Click on the 'Identification' tab. Make sure the fields for 'Computer Name' and 'Workgroup' are completed (they don't need to be anything particular, just filled in).
  11. Click on 'OK'. Restart your computer even if you are not prompted to do so. ('Start | Shutdown | Restart')

PART B - Create TConline Connection Icon

  1. Double click on 'My Computer'. Double click on 'Dial-Up Networking'.
    1. If you aren't prompted to create your connection, double-click on 'Make New Connection'.
    2. If the 'Dialup Networking' icon does not appear in 'My Computer', you will need to install Dialup Networking:
      1. Click on 'Start' | 'Settings' | 'Control Panel'.
      2. Double-click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon.
      3. Select the 'Windows Setup' tab.
      4. Double-click on 'Communications'.
      5. Make sure 'Dial-Up Networking' is checked.
      6. If it is not, check it now and click on 'OK' and 'OK' again.
      7. After Setup finishes copying the files it needs, you will be asked to restart your computer. Restart your computer, whether prompted to do so or not.
  2. When asked to enter a name for this connection, enter 'Texas Comm'. Make sure the modem listed is correct and click on Next.
  3. Enter the area code and phone number for your TConline connection. Numbers are listed in your startup kit.
    • A complete list of TConline dialup numbers can also be found on our contact page. If you are in an area that uses 10 digit local dialing, leave the area code field blank and put all 10 digits in the phone number field. Click on Next. Then click on Finish. Make sure you enter the correct access number. TCOnline will not be held responsible if you connect to a number that is long distance from your line.
  4. Click with the right mouse button on your new TConline connection icon. Select 'Properties' from the menu.
  5. If 'Use country code and area code' is selected, or if 'Use area code and dialing properties' is selected, click to deselect it. Make sure the TConline dialup number appears just as you would dial it.
  6. Click on the Server Type tab. (This might be a button on older versions of Windows.
    1. Type of Dial-Up Server:
      • PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98
      • or
      • PPP; Windows 95; Windows NT 3.5; Internet
    2. Advanced options:
      • Enable Software Compression should be checked.
      • (Nothing else here should be checked)
    3. Allowed network protocols:
      • TCP/IP should be checked.
      • (Nothing else here should be checked)
    4. Click on TCP/IP Settings.
      1. 'Server Assigned IP Address' should be selected
      2. 'Server Assigned Name Server Addresses' should be selected.
    5. Click on 'OK' and 'OK' again, until you are back to the Dialup-Networking screen.
    6. Click and hold the right mouse button over the TConline icon, and 'drag' it to an empty spot on your desktop. When you release the right mouse button, select 'Create Shortcut' from the menu that appears.

    PART C - Connect to TConline

    1. Double-click on the TConline icon on your desktop.

    2. Enter your login name as it appears on your startup kit.
      Enter your password exactly as it appears in your startup kit Watch for L's that look like 1's (ones) and O's that look like 0's (zeros). Also check to be sure that you're entering capital and lower-case letters appropriately.

    3. Verify that the phone number listed is exactly how you would normally dial it. A complete list of TConline dialup number can be found in the Contact Info section.

      Most versions of Windows will allow you to check the 'Save Password' field, which will allow you to connect to TConline in the future without having to re-enter your password. Normally, this option will become available after your first successful connection with TConline.

    4. Click on Connect. This will dial and connect you to the Internet.

    PART D - Install and Configure a Web Browser and Email Program

    TConline supports a wide variety of popular internet applications, including both the Microsoft Internet Explorer and the Netscape Navigator. TConline also supports several programs for email and Usenet News.

    If you do not have a preference in web browsers or email programs, most are familiar with the setup of the Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
