windows DUN error 680

There are several possible causes of this 'No Dial Tone' error, usually if this happens after a ligtning storm, nine out of ten times you will have to replace the modem.

Check all Connections and Phone Line

Sometimes if you unplug your line from your modem, you could possibly plug it into the incorrect jack.

  1. Make sure that you are plugging the phone line coming from the wall into the phone jack on the modem that says LINE, you might have to get a flashlight to see this, it will either say LINE or have a picture of a phone jack.
  2. Try to connect again, if it still fails go onto the next solution.
  3. If not, replace the phone cord coming from the wall into the computer and try to connect again.
  4. If this still does not work, take a plain old telephone and unplug the phone cord coming from the computer into this to check if you can get a dial tone.
  5. If that works, continue on to some of the other solutions below, skip down to 'Check Telephony Settings' and continue on from there.
  6. Sometimes unplugging then plugging in the phone cord may give a dial-tone. If this happens, the modem needs repair or replacement.
  7. Plug a regular phone into the phone jack on the modem and make sure it has dial tone.
  8. If none of these work for you, read on to the next solution.

Replace the Modem

If nothing has worked so far, it sounds like your modem is damaged and will need to be replaced. Don't worry, modems are usually replaced for a very minimal fee. Click here for a list of recommended modems. We also sell modems for a very reasonable fee. If you just recently received this error after a lightning storm, you will probably need to replace it, to avoide this in the future, you might want to invest in a surge protector that is capable of grounding your phone line, these can be purchashed at Wal-Mart.
